Sample all of our balsamic vinegars and extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) at Katy Rose Oil Company.
“We feature several California Extra Virgin Olive Oils and a large collection of aged oils from around the world; Australia, Tunisia, Spain, Sicily and Greece,” says Don.
Don and Gale provide visitors with abundant sampling cups and bread cubes, but here’s how the experts recommend sampling oils. Place a small amount on your lower lip, and with the tip of your tongue, taste the oil for its degree of sweetness. Then sip the oil and taste for spiciness using the sides of your tongue. The differences can be enormous.
What becomes most evident in an oil tasting is that there are different oils for different foods, and since oils are indeed organic, they will change their color, flavor and potency over time. What might be called an aggressive oil flavor today may be best suited as a condiment, as with bread, but in a few months it may mellow enough to serve with vegetables or salad without overpowering them.
